Win Tickets to EDAC's Pre-Conference!




The Provincial Eating DisordersAwareness (PEDAW) campaign is giving away tickets to THREE lucky winners to attend the Eating Disorders Public Forum, “‘How to get from, ‘I’m, like, SO fat’ to ‘I’m okay’ in a Weight-Obsessed World,” featuring eating disorder expert and author Dianne Neumark-Sztainer!

DATE:  Sunday, October 5, 2014
TIME:   6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Reception and art exhibit
             7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Speaker
COST:  $15.00 (includes admission and refreshments)
PLACE:  Vancouver Marriott Pinnacle Downtown Hotel

    I stay strong in a weight obsessed world by reminding myself about how businesses benefit from people being "weight obsessed." I stay strong in a weight obsessed world by challenging the ignorant beliefs of others and sharing the knowledge I've learned, such as the BMI range 25-30 -- currently labeled as "overweight" -- has the lowest rate of disease and death for human beings.

  2. given that I have two daughters I want to pass on good body image and the message"love yourself" to them. after having suffered years of self hatred/dieting/ starvation I am happy to say that I am pleasantly happy with myself and love to eat - my kids have great body image and a strong desire to stay healthy and fit by eating good food and participating in sports. Would love to come and check out this event! Thanks. Tanya Scaiano

I've been 1 year and 8 months relapse free from my Eating Disorder of 4 years and the way that I have been so strong during recovery is being so confident in myself that no one, not even the media, could take away my happiness and pride I have in myself. I've taken up bodybuilding since the start of my recovery and from there I have found what I truly love. Although many people believe that women shouldn't defy the 'feminine' ways, I look to it as being who I am, NOT how people expect me to be. Being strong means to believe in yourself. You need to be so confident and sure of who you are in this type of day and age. You need to know that there is no one else to be you in your story. You are the main role. You don't have any replacements or backups. You are you, no one can play your part. You must be able to love yourself, you must be able to trust yourself, and you must, must, MUST, be able to see that no matter what others expect you to be you have to be strong in who you are.

  4. I follow Facebook pages like Love Our Bodies, Love Ourselves, beauty redefined, Toward the Stars, Amy Poehler's Smart Girls, and others to remind myself that not everyone buys into the weight obsessed culture, and I don't have to either!

In order to stay strong in a world where weight, size, and appearances take top priority at times, I stay informed of all the positive changes that some industries in the media are making in order to promote healthy body image and self esteem. Staying on top of the current changes being made give me hope that self acceptance is in the near future, and that we can strive to take away the stigma of eating disorders together as a society. As well, I let myself be helped when I know that I am struggling with my thoughts and obsessions over food and appearance. I look to friends, family, and strangers that have dealt with the disorder as well and try to fend off negativity by following in their footsteps to recovery, in a way that connects me to them. It gives me strength and hope to know that there are people out there rooting for my recovery and promoting positive change.

  6. I stay strong by focusing on positive messages surrounding health coming for healthy female role models around me and finding peace in nature. I try to steer myself away from fashion magazines and other images/media that promote thin-ness.
